The Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has significantly ramped up its public Wi-Fi program, effectively doubling its coverage across the province to boost digital access for citizens.
PSCA officials confirmed that the number of free Wi-Fi hotspots in Lahore has jumped from 230 to 430. Beyond Lahore, the service has now been extended from 11 to 22 districts, encompassing areas like Kasur, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Gujrat, Jhelum, Attock, Hasan Abdal, Sahiwal, Okara, and Murree. This expansion comes on the heels of recent upgrades aimed at improving internet access in Punjab’s urban and semi-urban centers, including the activation of public Wi-Fi in Gujrat city just last week.
Growing Demand and Tech Upgrades
Data from the PSCA indicates the widespread adoption of the service, with over 37.22 million users benefiting to date and consuming more than 905 terabytes of data. These figures highlight the increasing need for dependable and free internet access in public spaces.
To accommodate this rising demand and ensure optimal performance, the PSCA has upgraded its infrastructure to Wi-Fi 6 technology. This transition is expected to deliver faster internet speeds, reduced latency, and more stable connections, particularly in crowded areas.
The PSCA’s free Wi-Fi initiative aligns with the government’s broader objective of fostering digital inclusion and smart city solutions. By making internet access more readily available in public areas, the program is actively working to bridge the digital divide and enhance convenience for millions of residents.
